In 2009, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and I spent the next year taking care of her with no prior experience. I not only learned about how to take care of people but it was one of the best experiences I have ever been a part of. I gave her medications, made sure I was at every appointment, fed her, changed her, took her to different places and helped her walk. Although it was my mother, I still would love to take care of someone in their home and give them the same care I know my mother appreciated. Every person deserves to be cared for as if they were their own mother or loved one and that is the care I provide. I am willing to get certified but am not at the moment. One part I enjoyed about being a caregiver was taking her places that she enjoyed like a garden or park and have picnics and spend the day laughing. When someone knows they have a really bad illness the last thing I want to do is remind them and be morbid. Same with seniors, I want them to tell me stories about their life and laugh and do activities with me. After the year of care I provided she passed away and although I miss her everyday it is something I will never regret.
