We hired Dominique as our summer nanny through Care.com. Unfortunately, our experience raised significant concerns about reliability, professionalism, judgment, and trust. She was frequently late or asked to adjust the agreed schedule around her personal travel; on one occasion, after losing part of a vacation day to airport delays, she asked us for an additional day off so she could enjoy more of her trip. During working hours, we repeatedly observed Dominique watching TikTok and other content on her phone while our infant was awake, despite our explicit request that there be no social media or screens around our daughter. We also found that she slept in our daughter’s room during working hours rather than completing the household duties included in the role when our daughter was sleeping. Our greatest concern arose after the employment relationship ended. Dominique retained a key to our home after her employment concluded and, despite a written request and deadline for its return, did not provide proof that it had been postmarked for return. We ultimately escalated the unreturned key through Care.com’s Trust & Safety process and law enforcement. We were additionally concerned that photographs of our infant remained on Dominique’s personal phone after the caregiving relationship ended. Based on the repeated scheduling issues, disregard for our childcare instructions, failure to complete agreed duties during working hours, and serious trust and property concerns at the conclusion of the relationship, we would not rehire or recommend Dominique for a caregiving position involving children or access to a family’s home.
