In total, I have 33+ years of experience in the care taking field. When I was 16 years old, my first job was as a nurses aide in a Nursing Home. It was one of the most fulfilling jobs I've ever had. I continued working part time as a nurse's aide in nursing homes. After I started, my first child was born. When my children grew to be a little older, I worked as a direct care aide and then communication instructor in a program for people with disabilities. Most recently, my husband, daughter and I moved in with my husband's 84-yr-old grandmother to take care of her after her husband (my husband's grandfather) passed away. We stayed with/took care of her for 2 years. This included taking her to appts, keeping her company, meals, laundry, etc. At the same time that we were living with her, I also took on a position as a personal care attendant for 3 hours a day, doing much of the same tasks for a woman with cerebral palsy...... laundry, shower, meals, appts, etc. That is a summary of my experience. But beyond the different aspects of experience that I have, I find great fulfillment and gratification in providing companionship and care in the hopes of enriching someone else's life..... no matter what age or capabilities.
