While working at the hospital in Iowa City most of our patients consisted of senior citizens (I worked on an oncology/hematology floor). Because many would have to stay in the hospital for long periods of time I began to do more than just medical care with these individuals. I was lucky enough to create relationships with the individuals and make sure that they do not feel alone in this fight. Some of the individuals suffered from neurological issues including dementia, Alzheimers, and brain mets from the cancer. I also volunteered for a group my friend created known as" Iowa City Erranders" where we would go and pick up groceries, prescriptions, etc. for individuals (many being older) who are unable to leave their home due to the coronavirus. I loved hearing the stories from all the older individuals I have worked with and just being there support them during their treatments or end of life care.
