My experience caring for others started in my youth. My grandmother lived with us and caring for her was a normal part of life. I didn't know this then, but assisting her with daily tasks, playing cards, and listening to stories helped her stay engaged and feel valued as she was losing her ability to do many things. My career was spent as a human services professional. My background includes developing programs for people in need with a person-centered approach. This means I believe: *People deserve respect and should be treated with dignity and compassion. *People should be involved in decisions about their care. *Cares should be tailored to a person's individual needs. Examples of how this shows up in caring for older adults include: *Providing choices whenever safe and possible *Considering the person's history, interests, and preferences *Helping people maintain control and make decisions about their care.
