Where do you start.
By Robin P. on Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 11:06 AM EST
I have a six year old girl diagnoised with ADHD and ODD. We started on a stimulant drug and she has improved, but at moments lashes out. We have made an appointment for therapy. As a parent I have read about medications and articles on ADHD but have found it hard to find anything on ODD. Where do I start. I feel like knowlage is the power to help my daughter be the best she can be.

I think ODD is best treated by behavior modification/psychotherapy. Both of these treatment systems appear to be thorough and effective.

my son is 5 and he was dianosed when he was 4 hes very hyper. we chose not to give him drugs because a childs mind is not yet fully developed and Im just against it. we stopped milk products no red or yellow dyes in food and I can honestly say he has calmed down a great bit he also did a year of OT and sees a behavior therapist. Hes in kindergarden and has a IEP and is doing well, he also has sensory processing disorder and has a OT see him in school once a week. Ive seen a big difference in him

I think behavioral modifications are always the best and safest way to start treatment in kids with ADHD, especially really young children. I hope therapy continues to control your son's symptoms.

well I do know in school they let him bounce on a ball or run errands to get the energy out and if he doesnt finish work in school they send it home cause he loses focus, but I do alot of home schooling with him so I think it helps they teacher said she can tell he knows his stuff. Im a stay at home mom and I think at some point if aiden starts not doing well in school and they say try medication I would pull him from the school and home school him, medication is not the answer it covers it up. I have friends with kids on those medications and they are on sleeping pills and one kid lost so much weight he almost died, why cause its not convenient for a teacher, come on its crazy, theres just other solutions I believe, sorry for my rant I just feel strongly about meds and giving it to kids

Bobbie H I think it really depends what teacher you get not all of them understand your child and look at it as behavior issues, my son had a teacher in preschool who would put him in timeout for running around the table or rolling around on the carpet and a few times she wouldnt let him go to the bathroom and would make him hold it cause he refused to do his work cause he doesnt know how to hold a pencil properly and its hard for him. However I didnt see eye to eye with that teacher and had something to say about that. She told me I should medicate my child. I was beside myself, because it would be easier for her, I went to the principle on that one. He now is in kindergarden with a new teacher who understands him and has a IEP and sees a OT once a week he is doing much better and loves school. I think it takes a great deal of hardwork for them to stay still all day but he does it, I was also told the hyper part goes away when hes around ten and the add part will still remain. I think if that is the case I will just try to help him the best I can, or home-school him.
